But you have to expect chickens to be clutchy…

April 5, 2007

This was a first. Our grumpy hen, who does an impression of a killer eagle if you come near her when she is roosting, just emerged from the roost with a broken egg stuck to her breast. I would have thought even chickens knew better, if only because of some implicit DNA-driven imperative to preserve the species. This particular hen is the group brooder–she sits on any egg any of the hens lays–and she becomes testy when I pick her up to check for eggs. She probably covered that egg with all her might when she saw me coming, and scrunched it. Now the other hens will pluck her so they can feast on the remains.

The dimness of chickens is no urban legend.
