Update: Melamine synergy

May 1, 2007

Nothing like national panic to bring forth answers: the FDA has determined that melamine plus cyanuric acid, neither of which would be “particularly toxic” alone, combine to form crystals in the kidneys, blocking them. Both substances were found in the urine of animals who died or became sick from tainted pet foods containing Chinese wheat or rice gluten. Both substances are evidently fair game as cheap food counterfeits in China.

Oh yes: the human food chain is at risk if we don’t quit importing these poison food knock-offs from China.

Here’s the story from CNN.
