They’re playing her song….

June 13, 2007

I noticed a brief item that Sen. Clinton is conducting an Internet solicitation for a campaign song. It seems that hopefuls are submitting their acts via U-Tube. Some are unkind, others bizarre. This is so cute, because she appears in her own video solicitation doing kind of a be-bop of her own to humor the contestants along, dressed in one of her usual pretty pastel Chairman Mao jackets.

This spring, the Met premiered an opera, The First Emperor, by Chinese composer Tan Dun. The music was beautiful. The story centers around Emperor Qing, the first ruler of a unified China, who solicits the services of his old friend, a composer, to write a national anthem that will be catchy enough to keep the Imperial regime fat, happy, and unified. The composer friend, hateful of the Emperor now that he’s a vicious autocrat, bites off his own tongue, spits it at the Emperor, and dies. Then we hear the anthem he created:  It is “the slave song:” the slaves are singing the new national dirge.

I don’t know why I thought of the opera seeing Sen. Clinton and her quest for a campaign song. Maybe it was the jacket.

It probably was the jacket. It probably wasn’t her operatic voice.

Someone secretly recorded her singing the National Anthem at a baseball game and posted it on the internet.

    It was not particularly flattering.

“Anacreon in Heaven” is a pretty tough tune for anyone, though.

I’m kind of surprised CNN didn’t include a poll category for who voters considered the best singer.

    I wanna see the video.

I’m pretty sure I caught the feature at; if you search there it’s probably still around. I didn’t upload it because it takes up space, it’s probably not public domain, and I don’t know how. If you submit an entry to her contest, though, be sure to send us the link!
