“English Spoken” There, is that hate speech?

May 26, 2008

I am incensed. The language of the land and a lingua franca of the civilized world had been deemed inadequate for official purposes in Grant County, Washington.

Worse, this wasn’t Grant County’s decision, but the Federal government’s.

Here in Washington State in the United States, on the continent of North America, a small agricultural county has been compelled by the Federal government to become a de facto bilingual enclave, absent any act of Congress making such an absurdity official.

No act of Congress has imposed bilingual status on our nation–yet. However, this is not necessary when a federal civil rights complaint can accomplish the same thing in a local area. Stupid, stupid lawyers.

I’m certain of being busted for hate speech, but really, people: if you can’t speak the language of the country in which you choose to settle, at least try to avoid the need for police and government officials who speak your language. And if you must, please consider settling in an area where bilingual officials are affordable.

Poor Mattawa, out there in money-challenged, agricultural Grant County.

You can read this and weep in the language of your choice.

You’re a little paranoid, if you think that’s anything like hate speech. Mind you, you’re a little paranoid if you think the Language Police are going to bust the door down and somehow force you to speak another language- why, that hasn’t been done since it was made illegal to speak most Native American languages.

FWIW, the 60’s until today is pretty much the only period in American history when there haven’t been a large number of linguistic enclaves speaking almost exclusively German, Spanish, Dutch or Yiddish. Don’t be afraid.
